* FREESCO is a single floppy distribution of Linux, intended to be a replacement for minor Cisco routers.
	* It's name is derived from FREE ciSCO, and is not associated in any way with the SCO Unix operating system.
	* By design, FREESCO can be installed on a floppy disk or hard disk ... and is compatible with 386 (and newer) generation pc's.

The history of FREESCO

FREESCO is a spin-off of Project Ballantain. Development on Ballantain has stopped. The manual is still online, but for how long?

by cjr

The latest version of Ballantain in my possesion is dated May 18, 1999. It was the final release before freesco although freesco was already in development for a while prior.

Introduction

This DokuWiki (what's a wp>Wiki?) has been setup in an attempt to come up with a better manual.
Sure, we already have a manual, but IMHO this manual lack explanation to the how and why of certain options. No offence to the authors! I know a lot of hours went into it allready.

It is my hope that FREESCO users will pitch in and give something back to the community by adding their inputs to this wiki. Eventually a better manual will evolve.

DokuWiki Statistics

I've added a simple page counter in the wiki, so now you can use DokuWiki Views to get an idea what article is the most popular and how many visits the wiki has.

(Not to be attempted by amateurs)

----------

Freesco is actually just Linux 2.0.38 with custom modifications and programs integrated, a custom configuration and
custom-built setup tools.

Thus, to compile programs for Freesco, you need to be able to compile programs to a Linux 2.0.38 kernel. There are quite a few ways to get such a system running, but quite possibly the quickest is to use the ZipSlack Slackware 3.9 distribution and update the kernel to 2.0.38 (from 2.0.37).
